Website Pricing

Let’s assume you are here because you realize you need a website and you want to know what it will cost you. There are several avenues you can pursue:

  • You can build your own site
  • Call on a friend or relative working in technology
  • Shop at a web templates site
  • Hire a web company

The method that you choose should be the one that best suits your budget, time lines, and technological skills. You can pay as much as you want for a website as I am sure that you will find someone willing to charge you the sky if you tell them that is what you’re willing to pay. However there are smarter and safer ways to shop for a web solution so let’s examine a few of those ways.

Some costs will apply to any method you choose. Every web site needs a domain name (i.e. www.justasimplesite.com), a place to store the website online (hosting space), and time. Hosting and domain registration typically costs up to $65 a year. Some services charge less, and some charge much, much more. Quite often a web company will handle the registration of your domain and hosting for you. If you are looking to save a few dollars and shopping for these yourself, I strongly recommend you do a little research to get the right service rates for your needs!

The following is a breakdown of what you will need to invest in each of the web production methods :

Cost to Build Your Own Site: A minimum of domain and hosting costs. Beyond that, research, and skills training.

Cost of a Friend or Relative to Make Your Website: A minimum of domain and hosting costs. Time can be a major factor here as your friend or relative may be acquiring new skills while building a site for you.

Cost to Buy a Pre-Made Web Template: A minimum of domain and hosting costs. You can find plenty of free web template sites simply by doing a web search. The prices vary from free to several hundred dollars; depending on the solution you buy. With the free sites be aware of the copyright and copyleft restrictions that may apply.

Cost of Hiring a Web Professional: Domain and hosting costs are usually provided and integrated in the website production. Average website prices range from $500 up to $4500 depending on the quality, features, and degree of customization your site requires. These prices are estimates for the average site. The prices will vary based on the features and customizations you require.

So what is the cost of a website? Some web producers quote a flat rate i.e. $500 for a 5 page site. If you choose this method, make sure you are buying 5 pages that suit your needs. If you don’t need a photo gallery,  don’t pay for one! They may also scale their rates, i.e. “$100 for 1 page, $2000 for up to 10 pages”. Others charge by the features you want in your site. Obviously the more feature rich, the higher the cost. You wouldn’t buy a house based on it having 5 rooms. The space of the property, curb appeal, and air conditioning are all factors contributing to that cost. The same goes for websites. In my professional opinion, find someone that will customize a site and a rate that is realistic for your budget, and the vision you have for your site.

If you’re looking for a quick turnaround on your site, I recommend hiring a professional. The design and development experience is pre-existing so you aren’t being held up while someone tries to figure out the little details. A web professional has access to all the required resources to get your site up and running as quickly as possible. They also have the expertise required to guide you in your decisions as you interpret your requirements for the online world.

@ Alvin – Thanks for your comment. There’s a couple of things I consider when creating a layout; mainly the audience and ease of use. This layout is designed for left to right reading in a ‘z’ pattern (start reading at top left and end at the bottom right). With contrasting colours for each element of the page (header, side panel, main body, etc…). These elements are distinguished from one another, enabling what I hope is straight forward identification for each part of the page. It’s a common layout with intention – it is usable by a broad spectrum of readers. I could go on but your question has inspired an article that I hope to be posting very soon. Thanks for the inspiration!

  13. Do you have a newsletter I can subscribe to?

  14. Daniel Johnson

@Mortgage mike: Currently there is no plan for a newsletter but in the top right of the page there is a ’subscribe’ link for RSS feeds. If you hover over it with the mouse it will light up. Some of the elements of this site are scheduled for redesign and updates. Something a little more obvious perhaps? :) There are also a bunch of articles being posted in the very near future. Thanks for asking!
